Signs of a Malfunctioning Water Heater

The average tank water heater lasts seven to 15 years. Even after eight to 10 years, a typical water heater will run less efficiently as sediment builds up, parts corrode, calcium coats heating elements and the water heater wears down. When you see signs of a water heater beginning to break down, have it checked to prevent a possible disaster as a bad water heater leaks into a home.

Signs of a water heater breaking down:

  1. Old age. When you can verify your water heater is approaching the end of its useful life, it may be better to replace it with a more energy-efficient model. You should seriously consider changing out your water heater if is is 10 or more years old.
  2. Making noises. As sediment, including calcium, builds up, re-heats again and again, and hardens, a water heater will become loud and lose energy efficiency. Gurgling, rumbling and banging sounds indicate a large buildup of sediment which will wear down components of a water heater.
  3. Water leaking. This is a sure sign that there is something wrong with your water heater. The inside metal tank could be fracturing as it heats up and cools. Water can leak from cracks, pinholes, fittings, valves, connections, pipes and other areas.
  4. Not hot enough. If your shower is just not as hot as it used to be, the water heater is growing older and unable to heat up water as when it was new.
  5. Discolored water. Corrosion of interior parts of the water heater will release rust into the water. This may be a sign to replace the old water heater.

LOSS OF HOT WATEr

A loss of hot water not only disrupts the day-to-day functions of your home and your life, but signals a serious problem with a water heater. Contact the water heater professionals at S&B Plumbing, Sugar Land, Texas. We know water heaters inside and out, are are ready to help when you have a loss of hot water.

Causes of a Loss of Hot Water

Cold, cool or even lukewarm water in your plumbing taps is a certain indication that something seriously is wrong with your water heater. Call the water heater experts at S&B Plumbing, Sugar Land, Texas, for a helping hand. There are several potential reasons why a water heater will fail to do its job and produce hot water.

  1. Bad valve for gas flow control. Once a gas control valve fails, gas flow stops and the burner shuts down, producing no heat.
  2. Malfunction of the pilot light or ignition system. Gas from the burner will not light if there is a failure of the pilot light or ignitor.
  3. Gas burner problems. The jets on a clogged-up, rusty or dirt-filled gas burner positioned below the water tank will eventually fail.
  4. Bad heating elements. For an electric-powered water heater, one bad heating element will produce much less heat than having all of them operating correctly. Have the burned-out heating element replaced to restore the heating capacity to your water heater.
  5. Bad dip tube. The dip tube that supplies cold water into the water heater may be misaligned and cause too much cold water to mix in with the hot water.
  6. Build up of sediment. Minerals like calcium carbonate, and debris like sand and dirt may pass through the water main to your water heater, accumulating to the point where it interferes with the heating elements or burner in heating the water properly. A large accumulation of sediment may even limit the water-holding capacity of your water heater.

Strange Noises

What is causing those strange noises coming from my water heater? This is a question we often receive from our customers. And, strange noises in a water heater is one of the most telling signs of a problem in the water heater. The banging, clanking and buckling-type noises emitted from a water heater are caused by a severe buildup of sediment, including calcium and other particles that are clogging up the heating tank of the water heater. This buildup negatively affects the ability of the water heater to heat water effectively as the heating elements are often coated and blocked by the buildup, preventing them from heating the stored water. When a water heater is not working to its full potential, this disrupts the operation of the hot water plumbing. All of this makes bathing, doing laundry, showering and washing much more challenging and inefficient. If you notice strange noises emanating from your water heater, call the hot water heater diagnostic and repair experts—S&B Plumbing, Sugar Land, Texas. We know water heaters inside and out, are are ready to help when strange noises indicate buildup is affecting your water heater.

Causes of Strange Noises from Water Heater

Do you hear rumbling, crackling and popping sounds coming from your water heater? This is caused by sediment, including calcium, dirt, lime, sand and other solid particle debris collecting on the bottom of the heating tank. When the burner heats water trapped under the particles, it creates the strange noises, which sound a lot like making coffee in a percolator. Let the hot water heating specialists at S&B Plumbing, Sugar Land, Texas, fix your water heater problem. Do not let your water heater overheat with all of the extra sediment in it. Prevent a catastrophe—should the water heater deteriorate and then leak, burst or fail.
